Who is entitled to family reunification?

Spouses, minor children, and in certain cases also parents can, under certain conditions, join family members already living in Germany. The specific requirements vary depending on the residence status of the person living in Germany – for example, whether they are a recognized refugee, hold a skilled-worker residence permit, or have a settlement permit.

Process at the diplomatic mission abroad

The application for family reunification is usually filed at the responsible German embassy or consulate in the country of origin. Depending on location, waiting times for an appointment can vary considerably. After reviewing the documents, the mission abroad – often in coordination with the responsible immigration office in Germany – decides on issuing the visa.
